NAI National Conference
Mark your calendars for NAI 2017, November 14-18 in Spokane, Washington!
Immersed in rich cultural history and surrounding natural beauty, Spokane has long been a place where people gather to exchange goods and ideas. As Washington state’s second-largest destination (next to Seattle), the Spokane Valley is a hub for commerce, the environment and tourism. In its past and present, it is the largest trading hub for gathering tribes and businesses that include three states (Washington, Idaho, and Montana) and two Canadian provinces (British Columbia and Alberta).
With a vibrant waterfall and river running through this urban metropolis, one can easily forget that they’re in the midst of a big city. Spokane offers the best of nature and heritage, proving to be an ideal location for this year’s national conference.
The word “Spokane” comes from the local native community, meaning “Children of the Sun.” Join us in illuminating interpretation to our communities, ourselves, and future generations to come.
Call for Presentations
Deadline: April 3
The name of our host city, Spokane, derives from a Salish word meaning “Children of the Sun.” Like the sunlight shining down on this beautiful part of the country, interpretation has the power to illuminate the meanings behind our cherished places. The NAI 2017 conference theme, “Illuminating Interpretation,” highlights the important role our profession plays in creating great visitor experiences. Interpreters are singularly equipped to help illuminate difficult subjects and explore areas of common ground as well as areas of contention.
We are looking for session proposals that highlight successes in interpreting difficult stories, the work of sites of conscience, and communicating our message in times of conflict. An additional area of focus this year will be to look at achieving diversity goals through successful programs, community engagement, and interpretive planning.
