Scott McCallum
1954-2008
iZone regrets to announce that Scott McCallum, our founder, has passed away after a four-month battle with pancreatic cancer. We have lost a friend, a leader and an example of living life to the fullest.
Scott overcame a rough and tumble upbringing in the logging towns of British Columbia to become a leader in the sign and interpretive industries, first with Enameltech porcelain enamel in Canada, later with Fireform and its successor KVO in Santa Rosa, CA and finally with iZone, which he built into a premier manufacturer of Digital High Pressure Laminate with its own pressing facility located in Temple, TX.
As befitted his 25-year experience in industry, he was an accomplished craftsman in a wide variety of materials. Few know that he was also a journeyman practitioner of hand brush lettering and pinstriping, as well as being a realistic painter of great skill using both brush and airbrush. He was justifiably proud that he still owned, and regularly used, a wooden mahl stick and a full complement of brushes and traditional art tools.
Scott lived life on his own terms. He loved his family and enjoyed his business, the company of his many friends, good food and drink, fishing and his Harley. He was relieved to find that his admitted past excesses had little to do with his demise.
He was possessed of a rock solid moral compass and, to that end, was irreverent and defiantly politically incorrect to the last. He was a man among men; a larger than life character that drew good people towards him as he, in turn, encouraged them to do and be their best.
In facing certain death, Scott was an example of dignity we will never forget. He was simply the bravest man we have ever known. As an example, when asked how he was doing, he replied, "I dunno. I've never died before."
He is survived by his adored wife Terri, and children and his brother, Gordon McCallum of Vancouver, BC.
At the family's request, there will be no memorial service. However, donations may be made in his name to either of two charities, The American Cancer Society or The City of Temple Animal Shelter, 620 Mama Dog Circle, Temple, TX 76504. |
