Szabo
In
1948, Bert Szabo gradu-ated with degrees in agriculture
and botany from Ohio University, after having his schooling
interrupted by World War II. He served in various capacities
with urban park districts and retired as chief naturalist
of MetroParks, Serving Summit County in Ohio.
Szabo became a member of the Association of Interpretive Naturalists (AIN), one
of the predecessors to NAI. He served as the organization’s president from
1970–71 and was a board member for 10 years.
Despite retiring more than a decade ago, Szabo remains active in NAI, attending
regional and national workshops. He is a valued adviser and has given 17 years
of service to the Ohio Natural Areas and Preserves Council, a governor-appointed
position. He serves on the Old Woman Creek National Estuarine Sanctuary Council
and is active in the Greater Akron Audubon Society, serving for 30 years as official
compiler for the Christmas Bird Count. His most recent challenge: spending thousands
of hours identifying and categorizing photo archives from the “old days” for
the park district.
