The Certified Interpretive Guide (CIG) program is designed for anyone who delivers interpretive programs. It combines both the theoretical foundations of the profession with practical skills in providing quality interpretive programs to guests.
This 32 hour workshop includes:
- The history, definition, and principles of interpretation
- The importance of making your programs purposeful, enjoyable, relevant, organized and thematic
- How to use tangible objects to connect audiences to intangible ideas and universal concepts in interpretive programs
- Tailoring your programs for diverse audiences and how to utilize various learning styles
- Interactive group activities, demonstrations and tours
- Completion of certification requirements: an open book literature review, creation of a program outline, and a 10-minute presentation
- All materials, CIG workbook and supplemental text Personal Interpretation
Certification Requirements
Minimum age is 16 years old
Must attend the entire 32 hour workshop
Complete and pass with 80% or better an open book literature review
Complete an interpretive program outline (will be graded)
Create and present a 10-minute presentation (will be evaluated – must receive 80% or better for certification)

Gail Richard, CIT, California Trainer of Trainers
For more than 20 years Gail has lead trainings and workshops designed for educational institutions, public agencies, non-profit organizations and business corporations. She has worked as a naturalist in California and Hawaii and has brought her considerable skill as a trainer to this field.
