The Certified Interpretive Guide (CIG) program is designed for anyone who delivers interpretive programs. It combines both the theoretical foundations of the profession with practical skills in delivering quality interpretive programming to guests.
This 32 hour workshop includes:
- The history, definition and principles of interpretation
- The importance of making your programs purposeful, enjoyable, relevant, organized and thematic
- How to use tangible objects to connect audiences to intangible ideas and universal concepts in interpretive programs
- Tailoring your programs for diverse audiences and how to utilize various learning styles
- Interactive group activities, demonstrations and tours
- Completion of certification requirements: an open book literature review, creation of a program outline, and a 10-minute presentation
- All materials, CIG workbook and supplemental text Personal Interpretation
The Instructor
Andrea Anders, CIT, Interpretive Coordinator for the Houston Zoo, has over 20 years experience in interpretation, training and presentation creation. Andrea has an extensive background in developing creative interpretive programming for zoological park volunteers.
Certification Requirements
Minimum age is 16 years old
Must attend the entire 32 hour workshop
Complete and pass with 80% or better an open book literature review
Complete an interpretive program outline (will be graded)
Create and present a 10 minute presentation (will be evaluated – must receive 80% or better)
Course Materials
All course materials are supplied by the instructor.
The six interpretive textbooks used to complete the 50 question open book literature review are

- Interpretation of Natural and Cultural Resources by D. Knudsen, T. Cable, & L. Beck
- Interpretation for the 21st Century by L. Beck & T. Cable
- Interpretation for Park Visitors by W. Lewis
- Sharing Nature with Children by J Cornell
- Interpreting Our Heritage by F. Tilden
Copies of these books are provided for you to complete the literature review. You do not need to purchase them but they are available at a discounted price. Please see the registration form to order a set.
Snacks and refreshments are provided. Lunch is on your own. Please bring a water bottle and coffee/travel mug to help reduce waste. Other details will be provided in your registration confirmation.
The Setting
You will have a naturally wild experience at the Houston Zoo! We will mix the 4 days of learning with hands-on activities, group activities, and animal viewing in both an outdoor andclassroom setting. If you need suggestions for hotel lodging near the Zoo, please contact us.
