Conference Highlights

Helping Diverse Interests Work Towards a Common Community Goal

Civic Tourism in the News
Read "Fort Collins offers natural setting for tourism conference."

Welcome to Civic Tourism III, a conference hosted by National Association for Interpretation in cooperation with Fort Collins Convention and Visitors Bureau and Dan Shilling, author of Civic Tourism.

Mobile Labs
See what makes Colorado one of the most-visited states in America. Your choice of one of four to six mobile labs will take you to a variety of nearby towns and attractions that illustrate some of what works and what doesn’t in helping diverse interests work towards a common community goal. At each stop, you’ll talk to the people who made it happen and have facilitated discussions about what went right and what went wrong. Your suggestions for each of the mobile lab sites will form the basis for an open discussion on the last day of the conference.

Fort Collins, ColoradoConcurrent Sessions
Panel discussions and individual speakers from around the world will present the latest in civic tourism processes related to the tenets of rethinking economics, investing in the product, and telling the story.

Evening Events
Visit a Fort Collins-based microbrewery famous around the world for its unique approach to business that includes triple bottom line (social, environmental, and economic) success.

Helping Diverse Interests Work Towards a Common Community Goal
Civic Tourism’s mission is to "reframe" tourism's purpose from an economic goal to a tool that can help the public enhance what they love about their place. It provides a forum for citizens to decide if, how, and for what purpose the ingredients of place (cultural, built, natural) can be integrated to create a dynamic, distinctive, and prosperous community. Ideally, Civic Tourism involves all stakeholders to build strong partnerships between corporations, family-owned businesses, natural and cultural heritage resource sites and events, tourism attractions—everyone should have a voice and a place at the table. And at the Civic Tourism III conference, everyone will.

In Fort Collins, where renewal is a way of life, you’ll find award-winning schools, a globally focused university, thriving arts scene, eclectic shops and restaurants, hundreds of miles of walking and biking paths, and a plethora of outdoor activities. The Civic Tourism III conference gives you the opportunity to experience Fort Collins, northern Colorado, and Wyoming like never before.
