STAFF REPORT

Update by the Executive Director
Tim Merriman, Executive Director

December 2007

Audit, Budget and Cash Flow

The November 2007 budget report for the National Office suggests a potential deficit for this point in the year of about $76,785. Bills are still coming in from the National Workshop in Wichita so final performance for the year will change with year-end figures, but a deficit is certain. Reasons for the deficit include:
Sales Manager not hired in May as planned so ad sales and store sals are lower than expected.
Mediation and attorney expenses of about $15,000 not in the budget
Fundraising was limited to pledge payments made from previous year.
Membership income is lagging and did not get the expected boost from the National Workshop.

Some areas performed better than expected. Those include the International Workshop in Vancouver, Certification, InterpPress, Investments, and Publications. The National Workshop remains our most important revenue source. This year’s event was excellent in programming according to participants but the lower attendance had dramatic effects on performance of that event as well as in membership and sales revenues.

We continue to rely on the line of credit to cover cash flow needs.

Business Plan 2007
Performance on objectives in the 2007 Business Plan Certification, InterpPress and Publications have exceeded income projections for the year substantially. Other categories remain below their projected amounts. Specific performance is available on the Action Plan Indicators page of this staff report.

Grants
Lisa Brochu met with Mike Whatley and Sara Melena who represent the NPS grant we have had in cooperation with CSU this past two years. A final report will be filed by January 31, 2008 for the grant. A downloadable report on Sara Melena’s research regarding nature and environmental center curricula will be for sale on NAI’s website in 2008 and a searchable database will be made available related to data collected through her research. We have also created an agreement with the National Environmental Education Foundation (NEEF) to share our nature center’s database with them to create a searchable Google map of the U.S. showing all nature and environmental centers. This will direct more traffic of interested persons to NAI while helping them find the centers in their communities.

Greening of NAI
We have been working with the National Workshop Committee for 2008 in making Portland a showcase of sustainable practices at meetings with intent to do that each year. The next issue of the Interpreter will have a letter from me explaining our efforts and documenting some of the savings of paper and energy that go with it. In the National Office we are switching to Ecolab products, noted for their lower impact on the environment in packaging, storage of materials, and impact on the waste stream. Other efforts will be made, documented and reported as time goes by but we wanted you to know of the start we’ve made on this.

InterpPress
Sales of existing books go well with 135% of projections for the year achieved to date. The Association Store sales are at 70% of the annual objective. Those will not likely increase substantially by year-end.

Journal of Interpretation Research
The second issue for 2007 is at the printer and will be mailed by Dec. 31, 2007.

Leases
Both leases downstairs at 230 Cherry St. have been renewed into 2008. NPCA is up for renewal mid-summer and RMBO on January 15, 2009.

Staff Changes
The new Sales Manager position has been filled. Laura Diane Moore was hired to begin work on January 9, 2008. She has broad experience in ad sales and marketing and will work on improving NAI’s performance in all areas of sales including ads, books, clothing, and co-sponsorships.

Training and Speaking
In November I represented NAI at NAAEE’s meeting in Virginia Beach and we had a booth in their trade show. I also trained in a CIT course in Hawaii in December with 23 participants from the U.S., Japan and China.
