Certification
A certification program assessment (state-of-the-program report) has been completed and will be posted to the website later this month. The report looks at program history, goals and objectives, current status, challenges, and recommendations for improvement. We are in the process of initiating a number of new reports that will help us better understand and communicate the value of the certification program to the institutions that use it or are thinking of using it and will keep those posted on the website as they become available. The latest numbers for each category are as follows:

Category Applied Awarded as of December 31, 2004 Awarded as of December 2003 Awarded as of December 2002
CIT 397 175 (170 with CIG trainer status; 59 with CIH trainer status also) 133 80
CIM 68 15 9 4
CHI 124 17 11 5
CIP 164 41 26 17
CIG 2528 2289 1344 720
CIH 190 179 56 0 (category did not exist)
Total 3471 2373 1579 826

In January, we completed a CIT course in Chicago that was booked full by Chicago Wilderness (a consortium of museums, parks, nature centers, etc. in the Chicagoland area). This workshop gets the CIG program into two dozen new venues in the Chicago area and they have asked us to return with a CIH Trainers workshop later this year. A CIH Trainers workshop was held in Monterey, CA also in January. We are now attempting to get workshops for all of the coming year on the website as early as possible. Please be reminded that all board members and section leaders can take a workshop at no charge (except certification fee if certification is desired) during their tenure on the board. I’ve been asked to clarify whether this means that a current board member can register for a workshop that occurs after their term is up, as long as they are on the board when they register. Technically, the motion that created this opportunity does not specify when the workshop must be attended, but the intent was to acquaint current board members with the certification program, so I leave it to individual board members’ discretion and will honor registrations that occur while the board member is still on the board regardless of the workshop date.

International
The international workshop will be held at Wyndham Condado hotel in San Juan, Puerto Rico, May 13-17 2006. We are in the process of nailing down program specifics and should have a call for papers up on the website by the end of January. An advisory committee made up of 25 members and colleagues from around the world have been tapped as volunteer advisors (communicating by e-mail), and an on-site committee of NAI members in Puerto Rico is assisting with determining local opportunities for off-site sessions, speakers, sponsors, and entertainment.

Board Reorganization
The transition task force selection has been completed. Led by Vern Fish, the process will be conducted by Tom Mullin and Bruce Stebbins as section reps, Lester Hodgins and Steve McCoy as region reps, and myself as staff rep.

NIW
Deb Tewell will be reporting on NIW matters in her monthly staff report from now on.

Contracts & Speaking Engagements
No new contracts or speaking engagements have been initiated in the last month.
