1. Update by the Executive Director
Tim Merriman, Executive Director

Audit for 2006
We have signed the audit agreement with Sample and Bailey again for FY2005. They have observed our end of the year inventory procedures and will begin the actual audit process in late April.

Budget and Cash Flow
We finished the year with an increase in net equity for NAI of about $286,000 with $235,000 of that being Legacy Trust Fund gifts and pledges. Grants and certification were the other areas that outperformed expectations. Membership and ad sales underperformed along with the NIW 05 in Mobile. In total impact this is one of the best years we have ever had. Julie's good work with LTF and the generosity of members gave us the greatest gain, with KC and Bonnie DenDooven's $100,000 gift announcement being a highlight.

Building
We have met with both Directors of National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA) and Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory (RMBO), our leasees, and they wish to continue renting space past their current contracts in . We will extend their contracts in July to one year later in July, 2007. RMBO hopes to move to another location in late 2007 which would allow NPCA to move into that larger suite that RMBO occupies. That would free up the front suite of 1,000 square feet for NAI use which will be much needed by then. We will have to put new hires in temporary office space in the interim.

Consults and Grants
Rocky Mountain Raptor Program is working on obtaining funding for the first phase of planning for their new project in Fort Collins which will cost $450,000. There is a $32,500 consult fee for NAI within that total amount. We have other minor speaking engagements and grant opportunities in progress for early in the year as well.

Definitions Project
This first meeting of the Definitions Project took place in Fort Collins on December 1st and 2nd and brought 26 people from about 24 organizations and agencies together. This was the first time to the knowledge of any participant that most of the nonformal education groups in the U.S. have ever met. The two days of discussions of definitions were fascinating with some admitting to no need for greater clarity in terminology while many of us argued for just that. Our NAI position in this has been that using clear definitions in our certification programs has led to much greater credibility and clarity as a profession. Some pointed out that nonformal education will not be taken very seriously as a portion of the educational community if we continue to be diverse niche groups with diverse definitions for some of the same processes and goals. Ultimately the participants are very interested in the next three meetings to be held in 2006. The first upcoming meeting will likely be in June at National Conservation Training Center in Shepherdstown, WV, the training facility of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The grant supporting this comes from the U.S. EPA Environmental Education Office in cooperation with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and in collaboration with the Institute for Learning Innovation in Maryland.

Legacy Trust Fund
The Legacy Trust Fund total for 2005 amounted to $235,743. The KC and Bonnie DenDooven gift of $100,000 was an important lead gift. For more information on Legacy Trust Fund click here.

Networking
I took part in no other specific networking activities than the Definitions Project in December and enjoyed two weeks of vacation.

Staff Changes
Student workers continue to be an important part of our operations during the school year. Sam Smith continues from the summer in providing maintenance work for the building and shipping of packages for the store. Kelsey, Kyle, Leeba, Trisha, Jessica, and Kate make important contributions to our ability to deliver services and are much appreciated.
