1. Executive Director

Update by the Executive Director
Tim Merriman, Executive Director

Board Meeting followup
• Personnel Policy Update - I have made an appointment with attorney, Dan Muffly, to review and update our policy in line with Colorado and U.S. law while also looking at fraternization policy as part of that.
• Executive Director Review and Salary - I have ordered copies of ASAE's publication on executive compensation and have sent those to Jim Covel and Vern Fish. I am drafting a proposal that suggests the method I would most prefer for a starting point in discussions of this.

Budget and Cash Flow
After completion of the audit, we were given many income journal entries to make that really boosted our reported revenue. Last year they took many income amounts off the books as "deferred income" under new GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) rules. That left us showing a larger deficit last year than we had based on accrual bookkeeping. This year it will give us a boost. We are having a great year in the first six months with membership meeting expectations that are very aggressive. Certification income is already at 85% of our projected total for the year. Sales items are at 50% in the Association Store which may seem just right but usually 3/4 of our sales come in the last quarter so that will finish well ahead of expectations. it is looking like an excellent year for growth in most income areas.

Building
We have just renewed another year of lease with RMBO for the space downstairs so our objectives in lease income will be met easily. We just completed our first full year here on June 24 and we are getting warranty repairs done by Heath Construction. They are running a bit late with those but we expect they will meet their obligations. The construction of the new 9.1 million dollar Mason Street North project just northeast of our building is underway and going well. It should be finished by next April and our parking area is part of that project.

Consults and Grants
We have just signed a contract with the Institute for Learning Innovations for the Defintitions Project and they forwarded half of the $123,000 in grant funds to us. We receive the other half in December. The project plan is drafted and being reviewed by our partners at this time. We await news on the $25,000 grant from Boettcher Foundation. The other USEPA/NPS grant has been approved but we will not receive funds till later this year. We have about $30,000 coming from that source. The Fort Collins Downtown Development Authority has just approved $24,986 for a Concept Plan for a Living Museum project with Rocky Mountain Raptor Program with Lisa Brochu and Tim Merriman as the planners. This project meets an obligation we have with the City of Ft. Collins to stay involved with any interpretive projects in the community and the income meets our annual objective for consult income.

Legacy Trust Fund
The Legacy Trust Fund now has $56,030 in gifts since first of the year with many other gifts pending. Julie continues to work with major donor prospects while also writing grant proposals. For more information on Legacy Trust Fund click here.

Networking
I participated in the Free-choice Learning Institute at the National Conservation Training Center in West Virginia in early June as part of Phase 1 of the grant program that includes our Definitions Project. This was an opportunity to interact with about 100 leaders in non-formal education and to tell them about the planned work in the Definitions Project. Lisa and I also led the Fort Collins Rocky Mountain Raptor Group on a site visit to the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum to look behind the scenes at their operations.

Staff Changes
Jim Pasquotto has started his new job with University of Colorado in Boulder and Paul is searching for a replacement for Jim with some modifications to the job description to better reflect what we need done. Heather's last day as Membership Manager after nine years with NAI is on July 15. She will be on vacation time till August 26. Jamie King takes over the Membership Manager role on July 18 and has begun a search for a Membership Assistant.
