Update
by the Executive Director
Tim Merriman, Executive
Director
June 2007
Audit,
Budget and Cash Flow
Audit activities in the office are complete
and we await Sample and Bailey’s DRAFT report for review. Cash
flow is at its worst as always at this time of the year but will
begin to reverse in July with registration for the National Workshop
in Wichita, Kansas.
Grants
We will work on the second phase of the EPA/NPS grant this
year to make what was learned through Sara Melena’s study of
nature and environmental centers more accessible.
InterpPress
Sales of existing books go well. A tentative contract
is in progress with Dr. Doug Knapp for a book that applies research
findings to practical applications in front-line interpretation.
Investments
Our Randall Scholarship investments are up about $19,000
or 19%, which is excellent. We will be harvesting the growth from
these after July 15 under our current investment policy.
IWH 2007
This event went very well and produced a greater
than expected surplus above expenses. The exact amount will be available
in July.
Journal of Interpretation Research
We have most of the materials for our first manuscript
of the year and Paul has begun laying it out.
Networking
I attended the recent ALHFAM meeting in Santa Fe, New
Mexico, to present with two other NAI members about the Definitions
Project. I also taught a workshop on interpretive planning in Baltimore
recently with Scenic Byways. I made a final site visit to Alabama
to complete an interpretive plan for Alabama Historical Commission.
Some work remains but it should be finished in early July.
Staff Changes
We have advertised the new Sales Manager position
and have started review of finalists. We are reviewing those and
will interview soon, hoping to hire by early July.
