1. Update
by the Executive Director
Tim Merriman, Executive Director
Budget
and Cash Flow
Membership income continues to be lower than expected while ad sales and certification
are doing very well. We are meeting weekly as a staff and working on strategies
and tactics to rebuild membership revenue and numbers. Our certification workshops
are selling out very well this year. Cash flow is a problem right now and we
are relying on the line of credit. Spring workshops should help with this.
Business
Plan
We are working on a visual display of business plan indicators for the office
that will keep all of our measurable objectives on staff minds each day. We
hope to use this to stimulate ideas to meet or surpass objectives.
Building
Our new parking area is nearly finished and should be fully functional at the
Board meeting at the National Office in June.
Consults
and Grants
The Rocky Mountain Raptor Program is looking for the funding for Phase 1 development
of their ecopark/raptor project in Fort Collins. We have a bid of $32,500 in
that phase of the project. We still await payments of $62,000 and $32,000 on
grants already approved through the USEPA, FWS, and NPS. Hopefully those funds
will come in soon. We have other grant proposals submitted to several foundations.
We also expect a payment of $27,000 or more from the Gates Family Foundation
Grant by June or July. that will support the building project.
Definitions
Project
June 1 and 2 will be the next meeting of the Definitions Project at the National
Conservation Training Center in Shepherdstown, West Virginia. The third meeting
will be in Fort Collins in August and the final meeting back at NCTC in West
Virginia.
Legacy
Trust Fund
The Legacy Trust Fund total for 2005 amounted to $242,405 which added to previous
gifts has brought total support for the building fund to $761,421. We have
taken in about $5,525 thus far in 2006. Julie continues to meet with regularly
with potential donors to continue the campaign through the year while also
raising sponsorship funds for IWH and NIW 2006. For
more information on Legacy Trust Fund click here.
Networking
Lisa and I went to Vancouver, British Columbia, on funding provided by their
Convention and Visitors Bureau to look at IWH sites for 2007 and to meet
with Interpretation Canada (IC). We had an excellent meeting with three
officers of IC and hope to have them involved in IWH 2007 as a partner.
The details are yet to be worked out but this was an important first conversation
toward that end. Deb Tewell represented NAI at the APPL workshop in Little
Rock, AR, and heard Richard Louv speak, author of Last Child in the Woods.
We have since confirmed his contract for NIW 2006 and I will be interviewing
him on March 28 for Legacy Magazine.
Staff
Changes
We are beginning a search for the Certification Manager position but will not
hire on it until we are certain that revenue streams are meeting or surpassing
our expectations for the year. http://www.interpnet.com/interpnet/contactus.htm.
Strategic Plan
Please look at the Strategic Planning page in this report and
see if you have any updates to make based upon your efforts related
to those tasks. Please let Jim Covel know of any updates at JCovel@mbayaq.org.
Training
Lisa and I will be training with
a full CIT class in Gainesville, Florida, in mid-March. I will
be speaking at the Massachusetts Governor's Tourism Conference
in Springfield, MA, on March 29 for a consultancy fee. This meeting
attracts about 750 people each year.
