"Can you imagine tourism as an enabler of healthy placemaking,
Scholarship Auction
Dan Shilling
Author, The Poetry and Politics of Place
a tool for meaning-making, and a means to provide the sense of purpose and connection more people seek?"
—Dan Shilling

Civic tourism is an extension of heritage tourism and other place-based models, which are noble pursuits but often don't work because communities still define tourism in economic terms. Civic tourism "reframes" tourism, from an end to a means—from a market-driven growth goal to a tool that helps the public preserve what they love about their place, while revitalizing the economy. To do so, this presentation recommends three strategies: 1) "Rethink Economics" urges communities to connect tourism to restorative market policies; 2) "Connect to the Public" recommends engagements practices that foster support for responsible tourism; and 3) "Invest in the Story" encourages a robust conceptual and financial commitment to place-making.

Dan worked at the Arizona Humanities Council from 1984 until 2003, the last 14 years as director. He guided Arizona's early research on heritage tourism, editing three publications and earning several awards, including the Arizona Office of Tourism "Person of the Year Award" and the Museum Association of Arizona "Distinguished Service Award." In 2005 he received Arizona State University's "Distinguished Alumnus Award" for community service. Dan recently directed a three-year project on place-based tourism, resulting in the book Civic Tourism. He teaches a seminar at ASU on sustainability, and he recently received an ASU fellowship to research the connections between Aldo Leopold's Land Ethic and sustainability.

Call for Presentations
This year's Call for Presentations went very well, as over 200 proposals were received by NAI! That means that attendees to the workshop will have fantastic sessions to choose from each day, and it's a great sign of the popularity of the 2008 NAI National Workshop.

The Call for Presentations is now closed, and applications are being reviewed by our committee. Presenters will be notified in mid-June as to the status of the proposal.

The beauty of the Pacific Northwest awaits
Columbia River GorgeThe NAI 2008 National Workshop will reveal a bounty of natural and cultural riches. NAI 2008 will offer the chance to explore the Oregon Cascade Mountains, Willamette Valley, Columbia River Gorge, and Pacific Coast, as well as all the professional development and networking opportunities you find at every NAI Workshop.

The workshop slogan, "Sustaining the Circle," refers not only to the role of interpretation in promoting a positive conservation ethic, but alludes to Enos Mills' charge to "increase the tribe" by widening the circle of interpreters.

Greening the Meeting

The average conference delegate in the U.S. produces 61 pounds of solid waste, uses 846 gallons of water, and produces 1419 pounds of green house gas emissions getting to and from and spending time at the conference. Recycle

During the 2007 NAI National Workshop in Kansas, the NAI board of directors adopted a new core value: We believe in responsible business management that supports healthy environmental practices to the greatest extent possible in all aspects of NAI operations. In planning this year's event, the workshop planning committee and the national office have been busy putting this core value into practice and reducing the amount of waste the meeting creates.

Look for these green strategies—and more:

  • Paperless communications (on-line presentation proposals, on-line registration instead of printed packets, CDs instead of printed Sourcebooks)
  • Sustainability tips for participants, presenters, and exhibitors
  • Contracting with a caterer that donates leftover food to food banks
  • In-season and local food
  • Recycling bins
  • Water/energy conservation (hotel towel/linen re-use programs)
  • Annual service project that leaves a positive environmental legacy to a local environmental program

Cost is important to NAI members and green meetings come with a price (some facilities charge $2.50 per person for non-disposable tableware). We have to make workshop decisions based on the higher cost of green services versus the cost of what members have told us is affordable. We hope that more consumer demand for green meetings practices will soon make them the norm in the conventions industry. In the meantime, we will continue to do what we can toward making our National Workshop greener. Your suggestions are welcome; send ideas to Deb Tewell at 888-900-8283 or click here to email Deb.

Come to Portland, Plant a Tree
Keep it green with NAI, the American Park Network, and the National Forest Foundation! On behalf of NAI, the American Park Network will make a donation in order to plant one tree for every participant at this year's workshop. You, too, can contribute to further offset your presence at the conference. By making a $10 donation, conference attendees will allow us to plant additional trees and enhance our sustainability efforts. All those who contribute at the conference will receive a commemorative Nalgene bottle in recognition of their support (while supplies last)! The reusable bottle will send a positive message to other participants. Refilling water coolers will be present throughout the conference for your convenience. Visit the NAI store on the exhibit hall floor to donate, commemorate, and keep it green!
