Interpretation Dialogues Road Trip

A professional development opportunity from the National Association for Interpretation

Alexandria, VA – Washington, DC – Richmond, VA – Charlottesville, VA
Dates:  April 13-19, 2020

NAI is introducing a new offering in our professional development programming -- the Interpretive Dialogues Road Trip. This program is a theme-based combination of travel to interpretive sites with serious discussions concerning challenges encountered by members of the interpretive profession and the decision-making process in addressing these challenges. It is intended to be a small group, with a lot of opportunity to interact with staff members at the interpretive sites and other members of the local interpretive communities.

For this first program we are looking at challenges surrounding interpreting issues of social justice and civil rights. We will begin our adventures in Alexandria, VA with a tour of several sites reflecting the city’s past with enslaved, freedmen and contraband African Americans.  We will spend time in Washington, DC, with visits to the National Museum of African American History and Culture, the National Museum of the American Indian, and the Martin Luther King, Jr., Monument. We will then travel together by train to Richmond, Virginia, for visits and conversations with the American Civil War Museum, Virginia Museum of History and Culture, Black History Museum & Cultural Center of Virginia, and other local museums. We will also take a walking tour of two of Richmond’s controversial spaces: Shockoe Bottom, known as the Devil’s Half Acre when Richmond was the second busiest slave trading city in the country, and Monument Avenue, home to five statues of Confederate generals and Jefferson Davis. We will meet with members of the Monument Avenue Commission and the Slave Trail Commission.

Our last stop will be Charlottesville, Virginia, and Monticello, the majestic home of Thomas Jefferson, for a look at the decision-making and planning processes that resulted in the new interpretation of the Jefferson-Hemings story. Participants will depart from Richmond with transportation provided to either the train station for the trip back to DC or to the Richmond International Airport.
