Theme “Locating Diversity”

This workshop will feature discussion on a whole range of topics and skills relating to interpretation. We have a particular focus on the place of diversity and self-reflection in our fields. Think about your work in terms of diversity. We invite both presenters and participants to reflect on the work that you do and the structures of your organizations. We ask: Where and how can interpreters find ways to increase, cultivate, support and harness the powers of diversity? What does diversity mean, and how can we make it meaningful in our work? The field of interpretation is rooted in the transformative potential of connecting people with the lands, resources, histories and places of our world. Do we have diverse audiences, and how can we improve our reach to different visitors? Do we have diverse staffs that understand and connect with the vantage points of our audiences?

Keynote speakers and webcasting
In Anchorage, Panigkap Agatha John-Shields will provide the morning keynote on Day One of the workshop. She is a professor at the University of Alaska Anchorage and a Yup’ik educator with many years of personal and professional experience in diversity training and cross-cultural education.

The afternoon keynote will be given by Parker McMullen-Bushman Parker is the Vice President of Programs and Interpretation at Butterfly Pavilion and is an expert environmental educator, NAI Board member and advocate of diversity in interpretation.

Regardless of which workshop location you attend, the keynote speakers will be broadcast to each location as a webinar, along with the opening and closing addresses.

Workshop structure
Day One will consist of an opening and closing address, two keynote speakers, presentations and sessions by attendees, and an NAI Northwest Region business meeting.

Day Two is focused on skill-building and professional development shaped around the specific offerings of each site. At both sites (Grand Coulee and Anchorage) you will join the site staff on a guided tour similar to those used with the general public. Following the tour, workshop attendees will work together with the site staff to use the tour as a focus for training on interpretive techniques, discussing diversity and learning approaches, and pushing ourselves to elevate our interpretation.

At Grand Coulee Dam the tours and interpretation are oriented toward heritage, museum and historical interpretation, with the tours focusing on the history of the site, its role in energy production, and the natural landscape of the Dam.

At Campbell Creek Science Center, the focus will be on diverse approaches to informal, outdoor education with youth. Attendees will join the staff in learning about how they approach outdoor interpretation aimed at different youth audiences.

Which site to attend?
Regardless of where you attend, you will participate in shared openings, closings, and keynote speeches. Depending on your site, you will have a different experience of Day One presentations and Day Two professional development.
