Using Guest Input
to Create Meaningful Sensory Inclusive Staff Training

The Birmingham Zoo asked 200 families who have children with sensory processing needs to visit throughout the year and tell us what we could do to make our facility more sensory inclusive. This presentation provides an overview of our research and shows how the Zoo responded, including how we trained our staff to meet this need.
Roger Torbert is the Vice President of Education and the “Diversity and Inclusion Guru” at the Birmingham Zoo. His responsibilities range from leading university students on study abroad programs in Zimbabwe to ensuring the the Zoo is accessible for all members of the community. He also serves on the AZA Diversity Committee.
