Heritage interpretation has both the opportunity and an obligation to be more inclusive of culture and to question dominant and privileged cultural perspectives. What does decolonizing look like and how might each of us do in our own interpretive practices to decolonize our programs, exhibits, and spaces?

Jane Beattie – Owner and Principal: Tuhura Communications. Jane works focuses on visitor experience planning, program and product design, and interpretive training and evaluation in sustainable tourism environments both in the US and abroad. Jane holds a Master of Science in Recreation Resources, Tourism, and Environmental Education from the University of Minnesota. She has published several articles in journals such as the Journal of Tourism Management and Legacy.

Bill Gwaltney - (Retired) Director of Interpretation and Visitor Services for the American Battle Monuments Commission - Paris, France. In addition to the American Battle Monuments Commission, Bill Gwaltney has served as the Guest Curator for Military History for the National Museum of African American History and Culture (Smithsonian Institution) and worked in a host of roles in his 33+ years in the National Park Service. Bill is also currently on the NAI Board of Directors.
