2019 NAI Chesapeake Workshop - Green Bank Observatory

Ssshhh! Keep it Quiet at Green Bank Observatory!

If you’re serious about getting away from social media for a day, this is the trip for you! We will enter the federal Radio Quiet Zone to visit the Green Bank Observatory in Green Bank, WV. On Sunday afternoon, Green Bank staff will take us on a tour of the facility, showing us how they interpret their site and the astronomical research that happens there. We will spend Sunday evening learning about radio data and
observing stars through optical telescopes, with training on Interpreting the Night Sky for All Ages. What determines the color of a star? Make a Star Guide to take home. Trade examples of folklore associated with the constellations. Monday morning GBO staff will share some practical applications:

  • GBO’s demonstration radio telescope and how it works
  • Interpreting astronomy in an urban setting
  • Compare/contrast radio frequency interference and light pollution
  • Provocation: Encourage your audiences to keep the night sky dark!

Bring your own best interpretive approaches for two-way brainstorming with other participants. Before we leave at noon on Monday, we will fulfill a request from Green Bank to walk the 1km nature trail outside their Visitor Center and brainstorm our best suggestions for interpreting the pathway. (Workshop counts 24 hours recert. Credit.)
