Frequently Asked Questions

What To Pack and Weather

Morocco in May is a gorgeous time of the year—warm and dry, but possibly windy. The high Atlas mountains can be around 70 F, and busier cities around 80 F. Plan on wearing breathable layers. A lightweight jacket that you can tie around your waist or put inside your backpack/bag is easiest. Long pants, shorts, comfortable walking shoes, hiking shoes/boots, sandals, “nicer” clothing for dinners, bathing suit and cover-up, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, bug spray, prescription medication. It is recommended that one dresses comfortably yet modestly. We recommend bringing a backpack/bag that has an inside pocket for your wallet/money. Do not bring valuables such as expensive jewelry.

Local Currency and Credit Cards

Moroccan Dirham (MAD) is the local currency. Approximately $1 USD is 9.9 MAD. It is recommended to exchange some money BEFORE you arrive in Morocco, as exchange booths are difficult to find, and we have a full agenda. The amount of money is up to you. We will have some time in the Medinas (city centers) and Souks (markets) for souvenir shopping.

Only hotels and larger restaurants and stores will accept credit cards, though most of them do not accept American Express. Visa and MasterCard are the most common. Also, check with your bank in regards to international fees. Bring cash for the Medinas and Souks and smaller restaurants.

Dietary Restriction

Most dietary restrictions can be accommodated. However, it may be challenging if you have highly specialized restrictions. You may want to bring snacks and make separate food purchases at stores and markets.

Taxi/Cabs

You can readily get a taxi from your hotel in Casablanca and Marrakesh. The hotel front desk can call and arrange a taxi for you. Same with most restaurants. This is safe and affordable. Bring cash.

Alcohol

Reminder that Morocco is a country ruled by Islamic Law. Some of our hotels are dry hotels. However most restaurants will serve alcohol. You can also bring your own alcohol and consume it in your hotel room.

Safety

Remember that Morocco is a country ruled by Islamic Law. Keep this in mind when traveling. There is quite a bit of diversity in the country, and all shades and colors are familiar and welcome. LGBTQ+ attendees are welcome and should feel safe especially with the group. Our travel partner has hosted LGBTQ+ groups with much success! However, public romantic displays of affection should be avoided with same sex partners and straight couples. Use discretion.

As with many large cities around the world, beware of hustlers offering directions and services. Politely but firmly decline their offers and keep walking.

Keep any important or valuable items in an inside compartment of your backpack/bag. Do not keep your wallet or cell phone in your back pocket. It is advised to keep your valuables and important documents inside your hotel room safe.

Our travel partner maintains close communication with the Moroccan tourism police to ensure constant safety and well-being of their tour groups. We also have a 24/7 customer service hotline for any emergency situation.

Internet and Cell Phones

Internet is widely available throughout Morocco. All of our hotels provide internet access, and there are no restrictions or limitations on online activities. Typically you will find the strongest signal in the lobby or other common areas.

Cell service is available in Morocco. Please check with your phone provider for international rates and coverage.

Moroccan SIM cards can be purchased through our travel partner for an additional cost. Email conferences@interpnet.com for more information.

Tipping

NAI has covered the tips for the bus drivers and the tour guides, and restaurants. It is not mandatory to tip at restaurants that you go to on your own, however it is customary to at least round up the bill and leave a small tip. You are welcome to tip additional as you see fit.
