Interpretive Leadership Institute

The Interpretive Leadership Institute is designed for emerging leaders in interpretation wishing to increase and practice leadership skills in a supportive and growth environment. During this course you will work within a cohort to discuss assigned readings, engage in reflective writing, and create a personal leadership mission statement and development plan.

Each participant will be able to schedule two, one-on-one mentoring sessions with the instructor during or up to six months after the course.

Course Content

This 24-hour course covers:

  • What is heritage leadership
  • Current leadership theory and concepts
  • Differences between leadership, supervision, and management
  • The relationships between meaning making, vision, and strategy and their application to leading in real-world settings

About the Instructor

Dr. Tom Moffatt Ed.D. is a career interpreter and a lifetime member of NAI. Over the span of Tom’s 30+ year career he has worked at a variety of interpretive sites as a front-line interpreter, intern coordinator, nature center manager, environmental arts park manager, and director of outdoor education for a regional park agency. Tom’s interest in improving leadership development for heritage interpreters led him to pursue a Master’s degree in Leadership and Learning, and a Doctorate in Heritage Leadership. He now works as a leadership development consultant with an emphasis on interpretation and social justice fields.
