About this Course

Why do we lead? Do you aspire to be a leader in heritage interpretation? Do you feel like your experiences to date haven’t fully prepared you for this kind of work? Don’t worry, you are not alone! Developing your leadership abilities is as critical as learning the techniques you have used as an interpreter. Whether you lead a small group of volunteers and docents, a team of interpreters at a facility, or interpretive activities across multiple sites, effective leadership skills are critical to success!

This online course is a jumping off point for new and emerging leaders navigating the transition from front-line interpretation to leadership as well as a chance for experienced leaders to further hone their craft. From theoretical to practical, you’ll emerge with a greater understanding of the concepts surrounding leadership, an inventory of your own leadership strengths, and a plan to apply them to your interpretive career!

Registration Rates

$650 NAI Member
$725 Non-member (includes a complimentary one-year NAI membership)

More Information

Although leadership occurs at all levels, this course is intended for individuals working in leadership level positions or for those who aspire to work in leadership beyond front-line interpretation.

During this course, you will meet every other week to discuss assigned readings and discover how to take ideas from theory to practice. Between sessions you’ll have the opportunity to apply what you’ve learned in your day-to-day work and to reflect on what is working well and where you need more practice as you build a custom portfolio of skills.

Online meetings will be augmented with reflective writing and online discussions where you will be able to engage in mutual troubleshooting, discussions, and support with the rest of the cohort. You will also be able to schedule two, one-on-one sessions with the instructor during or up to six months after course.

You will finish this program with an increased understanding of heritage leadership, a deeper understanding of your own strengths and motivations as a leader, and a roadmap to guide you forward on your professional adventure as a heritage leader!
